1. The agreement

In one sentence

Using LearnPatois means agreeing to these terms.

By using LearnPatois you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the app. If you are using it on behalf of somebody else, you are confirming you may agree on their behalf.

2. Your account

In one sentence

Start as a guest or sign in without a password — and keep your email account secure, because it is the key to everything.

  • You can start as a guest. A guest identity belongs to one browser, and it is removed after a long enough period of inactivity — so make an account if you want to keep your progress.
  • Signing in uses Google, Apple, or a link emailed to you. There is no password to choose and none to lose.
  • Keep your email account secure. Anyone who can read your email can request a sign-in link.
  • Pick a username other people can see without wincing. We may reset a username that is abusive, impersonating, or misleading.

3. How you may use it

In one sentence

Use it to learn: do not harass other learners, automate play, scrape the content, or probe the service.

Use LearnPatois to learn. Please do not:

  • Harass, impersonate or abuse other learners.
  • Automate play, script the app, or interfere with how progress, XP and rankings are calculated. Results are computed on our servers, so this mostly wastes your time.
  • Scrape, bulk-download or redistribute the curriculum, the audio or the artwork.
  • Probe, disrupt or attempt to gain access to any part of the service you are not given.

We may suspend or remove an account that does any of these, and we may remove content reported and found to be abusive.

4. Gems, Hearts, Energy and everything else in the app

In one sentence

Gems, Hearts, Energy and XP are gameplay rather than property: no cash value, no transfers, and we may correct anything awarded in error.

  • Gems have no cash value. They cannot be bought with money, sold, transferred, or exchanged for anything outside the app.
  • Hearts and Energy are gameplay limits, not property. Both regenerate on their own over time.
  • XP, Streaks, League standings and Quests are records of play. We may correct any of them where they were awarded in error or through abuse.
  • We may change the rules of the economy — the costs, the rewards, the League ladder — as the app develops. Where a change would remove something you have earned, we will say so first.

5. Content

In one sentence

The curriculum is ours to license to you inside the app; what you produce here, we may use to run the service and improve how it teaches.

The curriculum, the recordings, the artwork and Doc belong to us or to the people who made them for us. You get a personal, non-transferable right to use them inside the app while your account exists — and no right to republish them.

What you produce in the app — your answers, your near-misses, and any recording you agree to share — you allow us to use to run the service and to improve how it teaches and grades Patois. That is how a wrongly-rejected pronunciation becomes an accepted one.

Patois is a living language and a continuum. Nothing in the app claims to be the single correct form of it, and being marked wrong here is not a judgement about how anybody speaks.

6. Availability and changes

In one sentence

We aim to keep it running but promise no particular uptime, and we may add, change or withdraw features.

We aim to keep LearnPatois running, but we do not promise it will always be available or error-free. Lessons need a connection. We may add, change or remove features, and we may stop offering the service — with reasonable notice where we can give it.

7. Ending it

In one sentence

You can delete your account at any time by writing to us, and deletion is permanent.

You can delete your account at any time by writing to [email protected]. Deletion is permanent. We may end or suspend your access if you break these terms.

8. Disclaimers and liability

In one sentence

The app is provided as it is, with no guaranteed learning outcome and no liability for indirect losses.

LearnPatois is provided as it is. We do not guarantee any particular learning outcome, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from your use of it. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

9. Contact

In one sentence

Questions about these terms go to support, and we will tell you in the app before a material change.

Questions about these terms go to [email protected]. If we change them materially, we will tell you in the app before the change takes effect.

These terms apply to everyone who uses LearnPatois, including guests.
